Prunus

Dwarf fruit trees are excellent choices for those who have small gardens or no garden at all. These miniature plants can be grown in outdoor pots on balconies, patios or roof terraces so you can enjoy the taste of your own, home grown fruit.

Description of the plant

Dwarf cherry trees are compact and slow growing fruit trees. They are usually at least partially or fully self-fertile so that they don’t need a pollinator which might be a problem to find if located on a city balcony. Cherry trees cannot form a true columnar variety, botanically those which are more slender than the usual trees are called compact cherry trees and we list them here.

Varieties:

- (Nana) Cerasella (syn. Piemont) – dwarf – medium to dark red, juicy, and sweet fruit in early July, partially self-fertile, ultimate size 1.5m

- Garden Bing® - dwarf, dark red, juicy, and sweet fruit in late June, self-fertile, upright, columnar growth, well-branched, to abt. 1.5m

Growing conditions and care

Cherry trees prefer slightly acidic, moist but not wet soil, or at least some extra water when the fruit is formed. Adding of good compost will help increase crop and the tree will get stronger sooner. If container grown it needs to be fertilized every year with a suitable slow-release fertilizer to keep the plant strong. They are mostly grafted on dwarfing rootstock and grow rather slowly, making shorter branches that seldom need pruning, but they can be trimmed after flowering. They are fully hardy to about -30°C (USDA zone 5) and tolerate northern exposures and wind if situated in full sun.
