Description of the plant:
Soapwort is a herbaceous plant native to Europe and Asia, closely related to lychnis and silene. Its name refers to saponins contained in leaves and stems which were used to produce soap in the past. In horticulture mostly perennial species are cultivated.Bressingham is a lovely soapwort variety forming neat rounded cushions smothered with small, rich pink flowers with a white eye from late May for 4-8 weeks. They are highly attractive to butterflies. It makes a dense, relatively slow growing groundcover with semi-evergreen, grass-like, medium green leaves.
Soapwort is easy to grow. It only needs full sun and free-draining soil. Watering is not needed after it’s established. Soapwort is perfect for rockeries, pots and throws, as well as sunny borders. Hardy to about -27°C (USDA zone 5b).
