Alphen’s Globe has been a sought after small tree in the last decade or so since it offers beauty of its parent – plane tree - but much smaller dimensions which make it suitable even for small gardens.
Its deciduous leaves are large – 20 cm wide, glossy green, with 5 lobes. Fruits are prickly spheres that remain on the tree during the winter. Its peeling-off bark reveals various shades of green, brown, grey and beige in ornaments that look like military camouflage.
This variety grows slowly or moderately, forming a very regular, rounded crown. Pruning is possible at the end of winter but is not required. It adapts to any soil type, but prefers deep, moist, siliceous soil. It tolerates air-pollution, extreme temperatures, and temporary flooding. Fully hardy to min. -30°C (USDA 5).
