Dutch breeder Petrus Hendricus Oudolf has already patented 3 beautiful coneflowers: Vintage Wine, Fatal Attraction, and Virgin. This latest addition from 2006 named Green Jewel® was patented in 2008 under PP18678, and ever since its introduction it proves one thing – it is simply fascinating.
Green Jewel® coneflower is both boldly attractive and modestly elegant. It makes 60-70 cm tall, sturdy stems that need no support, and produce large flowers atop. They are most surprisingly light green with dark green cones. Flowering begins in early summer and continues until September.
The colour combination of more shades of green calls for growing other boldly coloured perennials such as Alcazar red hot poker alongside. The plants form dense clumps and make a profusion of flowers that attract butterflies and bumble bees. Lanceolate leaves grow from the ground and then up along the stems.
Coneflower can tolerate almost any soil type but boggy but once established it will love some extra water and full sun. Deadheading will prolong flowering time, and occasional fertilizing will help, too. It is suitable for mixed borders with perennials, or can be used as a flowering feature among low shrubs and conifers, and looks lovely when planted in a mass in a container on patios and balconies. Fully hardy to min. -40°C (USDA zone 3).
