Formerly known as chrysanthemum coccineum, painted daisy is an old favourite from our cottage gardens. Robinson’s Red is an eye-catching variety of painted daisy with large, rich red to deep purple-pink flowers with yellow discs. They come out on 50-70 cm tall stalks from early June for as long as 2 months if deadheaded regularly. Fantastic as a cut flower but more rewarding in a mass planting out in the garden. It produces dense cushions of fresh green, deeply cut foliage that covers the ground around completely.
Painted daisy prefers constantly moist but well-drained soil and a lot of sun. It will not grow in boggy ground or heavy clay. Hardy to about -40°C (USDA zone 3) and suitable for large, outdoor containers.
