Deciduous broadleaf Hedging plants |
Ninebark is a low-maintenance deciduous plant which is available in several varieties offering different leaf colour and shape. André is a Czech introduction from Litomyšl Nurseries and was bred by Michal Andrusiv. It is valued for distinctly red new foliage maturing to a lovely shade of burgundy red with light purple-violet hues. The stems are red, too, and the reverse of the leaves is almost green which distinguishes André from other red-leaved ninebark varieties. The shrub looks beautiful especially when wind blows into its foliage revealing the reverse colour. In late spring appear dense corymbs of pinkish white, melliferous flowers, soon followed by attractive purple red fruit that lasts until autumn.
Ninebarks are so easy to grow. They take any soil, pH and location. The root system is so sturdy it can easily grow through heavy clay that will provide nutrients for a fantastic plant. André will look great grown next to other broadleaved plants with yellow or bright green foliage to provide the best contrast. Location in full sun will make the leaf colour deep. Pruning is not necessary as it branches well. Fully hardy to about -40°C (USDA zone 3) and suitable for outdoor pots.
