Dawyckii varieties of common beech are very popular for their habit and leaf colours. Dawyck Dawyck has upright, columnar habit, its initial slow growth changes after a few years to medium-fast, but never really fast. Deciduous leaves are vivid green, their colour retains their freshness almost throughout the entire season. They can be twice as large as opposed to the species, elegantly glossy. New shoots are prone to aphid attacks so if you have a smaller tree check for their ill-come visit in the spring, and randomly during warm and wet weather.

This beech looks absolutely fabulous in larger groupings which is preferred rather than planting it in the middle of a lawn because due to its slow growth it needs many years to look good on its own as a specimen tree. Pruning is possible early in the spring but not necessary. It is soil tolerant and fully hardy to about -34°C (USDA zone 4).
