Charles Joly is a unique variety of maple of Norway. It makes quite large, deeply cut leaves that emerge rich burgundy red several times a year, mature to medium green, and turn beautiful amber orange in autumn. Such foliage is easily mistaken for Japanese maples. It grows upright and branches well so even without pruning you have a dense shrub or tree. In spring it flowers with typical clusters of greenish yellow flowers followed by winged seed pods.

Its ultimate height varies with growing conditions, it is usually about 4m tall in 10 years without pruning. However, if you wish to keep it smaller, pruning is possible from late autumn to late winter in order to avoid bleeding. Regularly sheared shrubs look very good.

Norway maple is soil tolerant and will even do in poor and compacted soils if planted in full sun. Watering is not needed, only in the first year after transplaning. Fully hardy to min. -34°C (USDA zone 4), and very probably more. Suitable for outdoor containers.
