More and more breeders hybridize new coneflowers in order to achieve richer colours on a compact plant. In typically perennial beds tall plants are usually required more, however, in small city gardens and front yards a compact, profusely flowering perennial is more than welcome. BUTTERFLY POSTMAN coneflower is one of them and was bred by Henricus Holtmaat from the Netherlands in 2014, patent No. PP28524 was issued in 2015.
BUTTERFLY POSTMAN coneflower produces breathtaking flower colour - rich red, not purple, not pink, true deep red. Such red that drags all the attention when looking at the whole bed. Flowers are sweetly fragrant and appear from early July atop strong, dark burgundy red stems that do not break in wind or heavy rain. They are 40-60 cm tall and well branched. Lanceolate leaves are very dark green and grow from the ground and then up along the stems. Flowers attract butterflies and bumble bees.
Coneflower will tolerate almost any soil type but boggy and highly acidic. It loves full sun. It is suitable for mixed borders with perennials, or can be used as a flowering feature among low shrubs and conifers, and looks lovely when planted in a mass in a container on patios and balconies. Fully hardy to min. -34°C (USDA zone 4).
