ROYAL CANDLES® is a spiked speedwell variety which was found as natural mutation by Heather Philpott among other veronica spicata plants in Detlink, Kent, UK in 1987. It is distinguished by deep violet, dense spikes of flowers and compact habit. Flowers appear in from June until early autumn if spent flowers are regularly removed. Leaves are narrowly lance-shaped, finely serrated at margins, deep green. Patent No. PP18932 was granted in 2008.

Speedwell will grow in any moist but well-drained, reasonably fertile soil, preferably in full sun but partial shade will do no harm. Regular feeding will encourage formation of new flowers throughout the season. Hardy to min. -34 °C (USDA zone 4), and will grow well in a container, too, where the soil should never dry out, otherwise it is prone to powdery mildew.
