Great thrift or false thrift is a rocky perennial which is native to west coast of Portugal. It is renowned for great durability and reliability which is why all armerias are popular and cultivated almost all around the world where they are hardy. Great thrift has larger (wider) leaves than sea thrift and offers white, pink, red, and magenta flowers.

Sweet Dreams is a great thrift variety from the DREAMERIA® series developed by Howard Bentley from the Plant Growers Australia Pty, Wonga Park, Melbourne. The aim was to create plants with compact habit and extended flowering period.

Sweet Dreams armeria bears clear pink flowers composed in 3-4 cm wide, spherical flowerheads atop sturdy, 15-20 cm tall, leafless stems. The inflorescence resembles ornamental onion flowers but without any scent. They bloom incredibly long time: from late April until early autumn. Evergreen leaves are medium green, narrowly lanceolate but significantly broader than on sea thrift, and form a nice, dense, groundcovering tuft. US plant patent No. PP29612 was granted in 2018.

Thrifts love open, sunny locations, free draining, and poor to moderately fertile soil. Do not fertilize. They will be happy with a little bit of rain once in a while. What they hate are water-logged (clay-based) soils with standing water during and after the rain, yet they dislike too dry locations. Being used to saline environment they cope well with road salt; therefore, they are ideal alongside streets and pavements which are salt-sprayed in winter. Hardy to about -29 °C (USDA zone 5).
