Pink is not only a name of a colour. The pink is also a beautiful and usually fragrant flowering plant available in many species. The fringed pink, or the large pink is a European native which has become endangered in our country (Czech Republic) as well as elsewhere in Central Europe. Apart from sweetly scented blooms it boasts excellent hardiness and durability which is something the new hybrids are so jealous of.

The Dutch company HilverdaKooij B.V. introduced an enchanting series of dwarf pinks with many colours and called it simply Beauties®. These are selections from the planned breeding of the original species and the selected plants exhibit much lower growth, showy flowers, and excellent garden performance. The Beauties® include, for example, the highly successful and reliable KAHORI variety developed by the Japanese breeder Kazuyuki Shishido. And now also the TIIU variety.

TIIU is a dwarf pink producing a profusion of flowers over a long period. They are about 2 cm wide, single to semi-double, deep magenta red, and sweetly fragrant. They begin to bloom in mid-May with the main flush in June, then a summer break reduces their number to a few here and there, but in September they come back in full throttle. Leaves are evergreen, sessile, short and narrow, medium to pale green, and form a handsome cushion. The plant reaches only 10-17 cm in height and 30-40 cm in spread.

Dwarf pinks love free draining but not very dry, neutral to slightly alkaline soils. They respond well to reasonable fertilizing when flowers are produced, and benefit from light shearing after flowering. Hardy to at least -34 °C (USDA zone 4) and allegedly even more which we, luckily, never had the chance to test.
