Swamp mallow and its hybrids have been sought after plants for the past few years now. They are perennials with sturdy stems that have large, tropically looking flowers. The true swamp mallow (h. moscheutos) is a North American taxon home to mostly warmer states. But the Fleming Brothers from Lincoln in Nebraska, USA, crossbred h. moscheutos with other similar species (h. coccineus, h. laevis and h. militaris) and developed new plants with larger flowers and significantly improved hardiness. To distinguish them from shrubby hibiscus or other species we call them Hibiscus x.

PLANET® GRIOTTE is a French variety of hybrid hibiscus from the PLANET® series developed by Alain Tan, the same breeder who developed the successful CAROUSEL® series. It is a cross between h. moscheutos and h. coccineus and it was first introduced at the prestigious novelty fair Plantarium in Boskoop, the Netherlands, in 2013 where it received the Bronze Medal. European Patent No. 41113 was granted in 2015.

PLANET® GRIOTTE is large-flowered hibiscus variety producing flowers of diameter 20-25 cm. They are bright fuchsia purple with a deep maroon eye and in good weather may start blooming from July. Depending on the age of the plants they can bloom until October as long as the weather is warm and sunny. Flowers lack fragrance just like all other hibiscus. The deciduous leaves are no less attractive, they are maple-like, broadly 3-lobed, deep maroon in spring, dark green with maroon hues in summer, and golden orange and red in autumn. PLANET® GRIOTTE hibiscus grows fast about a meter in height, but in a garden bed with ideal conditions (moist to wet soil with enough nutrients) its height can double with age.

The plant is dependent on regular watering and feed supply. Use fertilizers with enough phosphorus for abundant flowering, or any other quick-release fertilizers where nitrogen is not predominant. Any fertilizing must stop by end September. Still, nitrogen-based fertilizer is useful when the plant wakes up from dormancy in mid spring but should not be used longer than 8 weeks. Hardy hibiscus emerges very late, sometimes as late as at the end of May.

For healthy growth and profuse flowering it needs a sunny location with a lot of moisture which can be achieved by good mulching. The soil must be fertile and permeable, never let it dry out in summer. Hardy to min. -29 °C (USDA zone 5), possibly more. Cut back the plant only a few centimetres above ground level in spring.
