Thyme is a low, prostrate shrub of Mediterranean origin that is commonly known as lovely spices in kitchens worldwide. Nevertheless, it is also a pretty plant that evokes the typical coastal atmosphere of Mediterranean gardens if planted in borders with other, alike shrubs.

Thyme is a ground-covering or mound-forming evergreen shrub, produces profusion of tiny, light lilac-violet flowers from early until mid summer. Fresh leaves have a lovely and strong perfume when crushed. They are elliptic and deep green.

Grow thyme in neutral or alkaline soil which will be well drained, in full sun. Light or partial shade will do no harm. These plants come from regions with hot and dry summers where they thrive. On the other hand, if you provide soil that will be slightly moist, the shrub will be much denser and healthier looking. Older plants benefit from light pruning immediately after flowering (midsummer) to encourage new growths. Fully hardy to -29°C (USDA zone 5).
