Scaly male fern is the main species from which the most beautiful varieties arose. Sometimes also called golden which refers to the midrib which is yellowish-brown but cannot influence the overall appearance of bright green colour.
Pinderi is a substantial variety whose fronds can grow as much as 80 cm long. They are sharply pointed, lance-shaped, and quite narrow. It produces dense tufts and young plants are closely connected to the mother plant therefore spreading is eliminated. The leaves are very hardy and withstand frosts for a certain period. Still we recommend cutting them all off in spring to encourage new growths.
Scaly male fern needs partial shade or shade, any type of moist but well-drained soil. Fully hardy to -30°C (USDA zone 5).
