Domino is another attractive variety of Japanese wisteria. In older sources you can also find its other name ’Issai’. It produces medium sized, compact racemes with fragrant, pea-like flowers that are a combination of light mauve and deep violet with a yellow spot in the throat. They come out in May along with leaves, and are followed by seed-pods with poisonous seeds in late summer. Pinnate leaves look rather exotic and densely cover the plant and its support from the ground level. They are light green, deciduous, turn vivid golden yellow in autumn and remain on the plant often into early winter.

Wisteria vine needs a strong trellis or a fence to climb, common wire fence is too weak and wisteria will soon ruin it. Wisterias flower mainly on short spurs along the twigs and pruning will encourage setting of flower buds. So cut back long branches to 5-10 cm every spring and also during the season.

Wisteria needs moist, acid, medium fertile soil. Fertilizing is not recommended. Young plants require a sheltered place, mature plants (and those with a stem) are fully hardy to -29°C (USDA zone 5).
