Kinky Krinkle is a collectors’ piece among Japanese maples. It was selected and introduced by Talon Buchholz from Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery from Oregon, USA. It exhibits upright growth and produces small, deciduous leaves which emerge red in spring, soon turn fresh green with red margins, and as the season goes on, they become gently crinkled just like leaves of Shishigashira variety. In autumn they glow with scarlet red colour.
Japanese maples need constantly moist soil that has to be well-drained, acidic to neutral, and medium fertile. Keep it mulched all year round. It loves a location with high air humidity, e.g. at a river bank or near a pond but it is not a must. For best foliage colour grow it preferably in full sun. It is very hardy once its wood has hardened and withstands temperatures down to -29°C (USDA zone 5), and suitable for outdoor pots, just keep it moist without a saucer.
